Details on the EIKI EIP 1000T:
Home entertainment electronics is making the transition towards High Definition and we experience the sensation of this new entity everyday. But there are some companies busy in manufacturing display devices which have native resolution of wide VGA, which is a very low end resolution. You must be wondering why waste time and money on such things?
It is always wise to take a step forward so why take a step backward? Well the answer to this question is that there are millions of people around the world who really want to enjoy their favorite movies on standard DVDs in its original format. Movies have much higher resolution e.g. 5000 pixels in 3000 vertical lines. Standard DVDs on the other hand don't have the capacity to hold the higher number. These days movies in studios all around the world are now digitally remastered and replicated on to the standard DVDs. This digital process, which is much better than the analog one, shows a much cleaner and sharper picture but in a lower resolution of 854 pixels in 480 vertical lines. Though the aspect ratio of 854x480 is 16:9 it shows standard definition DVDs with more clarity. High Definition projectors with native resolution of 1280x720 and aspect ratio of 16:9 can not justify the standard DVD resolution. You will have to convert up to 480 vertical lines to the projectors 720 native lines. The picture may not look natural and if there are any analog artifacts in the way they will simply be magnified. Other formats such as XGA resolution of 1024x768 pixels will not show the picture in the correct format either. You will loose a big chunk of picture resolution and brightness.
The only solution to justify standard DVDs is to find a projector with a native resolution of 854x480 pixels. This is where the lifesaver EIKI EIP-1000T steps in. It may be different than its counterparts as it is equipped with more brightness and color saturation. EIKI EIP-1000T is a DLP projector with native resolution of 854x480 pixels. This 480P Home Theater projector brings film-like imaging from standard DVDs recorded in the same resolution. The MSRP on this projector is $1,295.00. But you may find lower street prices on this. The Silver Gray color of the projector gives an elegant appearance and can easily blend with your living room decor. Pros and Cons The projector has 5 speed 6 segments color wheel. These color segments are in pairs of RED, GREEN and BLUE. This will maintain good strong colors in the image. Some High Definition DLP projectors now have Color Wheels in 6 color segments in Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. This combination of primary and secondary colors maintain good color saturation even when the brightness is increased. However, EIP-1000T is a Wide VGA projector in low price range with the benefit of good black level. These 6 color segments without a white portion make the colors rich and more saturated. If the source is good the black level can go down to 0 IRE. Faster speed of the Color Wheel and Vertical Refresh rate of 43 to 85 hertz minimize the rainbow effect. Though the projector's native resolution is up to 480 vertical lines it can accept HDTV lines up to 1080i and 720p. The built in scaler will map the incoming picture in to its native resolution accurately. Projector doesn't use any air filters since the optics are sealed which means no dust contamination and no light leakage. The projector doesn't have digital inputs such as DVI or HDMI for video.
The Japanese made glass lens on the projector has manual zoom and focus functions. The focal length is from 19.0 mm to 21.9 mm. The aperture or F-Stop is from 2.4 to 2.6. This is a fixed lens without any vertical or horizontal lens shifts. To get a picture with more clarity and without any keystone errors, make sure it is installed professionally. EIKI EIP-1000T is very similar to OPTOMA H31 in a way that it has same pixel resolution but with a higher brightness. OPTOMA H31 has 850 lumens while EIKI EIP-1000T has 1000 lumens.
Performance Picture images from digitally remastered original DVDs in DVD9 format are very clean and give a film-like appearance. Keep in mind that these standard definition DVDs have resolution of 854 pixels in 480 digital progressive lines. These go in to the projector on a one to one basis. No scaling is required. Pictures from High Definition channels such as Discovery in 1080i and ESPN in 720p looks very sharp on this projector. Computer images such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Internet are also displayed with accuracy though the images are down scaled to VGA resolution of 640x480 pixels. Though the projector is classified as a home theater projector the basic design is still a business presentation projector and because of this design the vertical upward throw angle is high. A ceiling installation of the projector would be more appropriate for the home theater situation. If the ceiling height is 8 feet or more and you use a fixed screen with 3" velvet border in the size of 120" diagonal, 16:9 aspect ratio and 60"x105" viewing area and the top of the screen about 2 feet below the ceiling you will have an optimal situation to display a correct image without producing a key stone error. Menus are easy to follow. There are 5 menu modes, Picture, Screen Adjustment, Projection Adjustment, Questions and Help. In Picture menu the Movie1 option brings the color temperature to 6500° Kelvin and maintains a deep black level in the image. The design and build of the remote control is average. Control buttons are laid out nicely, you can even feel them in the dark. The labels on the control buttons are clearly visible. Specs EIKI EIP-1000T uses Texas Instruments DDR chip in native Wide VGA resolution of 854x480 pixels. Total number of microscopic mirrors is 409,920. Mercury based Ultra High Power (UHP) 275 watts lamp produces brightness of 1000 ANSI lumens. Contrast Ratio is 2500:1. Overall illumination uniformity on the displayed image is 85%. Five speeds Color Wheel on the projector have six color segments. These color segments are in the pairs of RED, GREEN and BLUE. On the input panel there are 2 VGA inputs in 15 pin configuration. Each port can accept RGB signal from computer and YPbPr from Component source such as DVD player. VGA to Component adapter in cable format is included in the projector's accessories. There is one VGA out which can be used for Networking. Other input terminals are Composite Video, RS232, and S-Video and analog audio inputs for Left and Right sound channels. Power input on the left side accepts power cord with three prongs. EIKI includes a free 6' power cord in accessories. Control buttons are on the projector and the remote control as well. Projector Warranty on parts and labor is 3 years or 6000 hours, whichever comes first. The original lamp has warranty of 90 days. Conclusion With decent black level in the picture, good color saturation and low price, EIKI EIP-1000T is a good choice for the home theater under a budget. |
